Kanye West Faces Backlash Over China Concert

Kanye West’s recent concert in Shanghai, China, has drawn much attention. The rapper sparked significant backlash after he showed up over 40 minutes late, prompting thousands in the crowd to ask for refunds. Now, many are curious about what happened.

Kanye West called out for chaotic concert

Kanye West faced intense backlash during his recent concert in Shanghai, China, after arriving over 40 minutes late and facing numerous technical difficulties. The performance, which drew a crowd of more than 70,000 fans, was part of West’s highly publicized return to live shows in support of his upcoming album, “Bully.” However, the show quickly spiraled into chaos as impatient fans began asking for refunds, visibly frustrated by the delay.

The rapper appeared wearing black leather pants and a grey hoodie with “China” on the back. The show was marred by technical problems, including repeated song restarts. Fog, sparse lighting effects, and minimal visual production left many feeling disappointed. Video clips from the concert spread quickly across social media, showing audience members expressing outrage.

One user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “So I’ve been a fan of Kanye West since I was a teen. MBDTF opened my ears to the sonics in music. Was hard to get tix for him in Shanghai but got it. Was hyped af. Couldn’t even sleep night before. But. Worst concert I’ve ever been to. @kanyewest u can be better.” Another commented, “Shanghai consumers DO NOT PLAY. Massive crowd was shouting REFUND after Ye was late 40 minutes to his concert.”

Event promoter StellarAmberGroup later released a statement on China’s Sina Weibo platform, attributing the production issues to heavy rainfall. The statement read, “However, for this long-awaited return after 17 years, Ye’s team insisted on prioritizing artistic integrity. After emergency adjustments, the show was delayed to ensure the best possible experience and to minimize the disappointment for the audience.” The statement acknowledged the audience’s frustration and offered a formal apology. Ye’s appearance at Shanghai Stadium marked his first major concert in China since a 2024 listening party in Haikou. Tickets sold out within minutes, despite West’s ongoing controversies.
