David Corenswet Talks About Being Called Superman Before Casting

David Corenswet has revealed he was called Superman long before officially donning the cape for James Gunn’s new film. In a recent interview, the actor shared some of the hilarious stories of his friends comparing him to Superman.

David Corenswet on being called Superman

In a BBC Radio 1 interview, Superman actor David Corenswet shared that many people told him that he would make a great Superman.

The DC star revealed one of the first times that his friends called him “Superman,” which was when he bolted from his room in his underwear to silence a blaring smoke alarm in his school days. While he did not have a “cape” on, the similarities were apparently still noticeable.

Corenswet quipped that his roommate might have “projected” the cape in her mind. Notably in his TV series The Politician, one character also tells Corenswet’s that he looks like Superman.

Corenswet further shared that when asked about his thoughts about playing Superman, he felt it was “incredulous.” “Who could ever say they hope to play Superman one day? What a crazy thing to say,” he noted.

However, the opportunity presented itself years later when he got the chance to audition for the new DC film. The House of Cards actor chose to make his audition tape with his wife.

A month and a half after his audition, Corenswet got the chance to screen-test for the role, turning his long-held dream into a reality.

In the same interview, director James Gunn also shared that one of the major reasons behind Corenswet getting the role was the fact that he looked like Superman. Gunn also added that Corenswet had the “acting chops” and athletic ability needed for the role.

Superman is now playing in theaters, and early reviews have praised Corenswet’s optimistic representation of the fan-favorite superhero. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter noted, “David Corenswet makes an outstanding Superman/Clark Kent, his performance loaded with self-irony, charm, and poignant vulnerability.”
