According to medical examiner records, Julian McMahon died from lung metastasis as a consequence of head and neck metastatic cancer. PEOPLE revealed the Cremation Approval Summary Report from the Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office, which details the actor’s cause of death.

As per the publication, McMahon’s manner of death has been ruled as natural; the actor’s remains have been cremated.

According to the National Library of Medicine, a metastasis is “the spread of tumor cells from primary sites to surrounding structures and distant sites.” So any organ’s metastasis can be a “significant cause of morbidity and mortality.”

McMahon’s wife has also opened up about the actor’s death in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer.” The Surfer star “loved loved life,” his wife said, adding that he also loved to “bring joy into as many lives as possible.”

McMahon created a legacy of his own since he debuted as an actor three decades back. Some of his most notable works include Nip/Tuck, Fantastic Four, FBI: Most Wanted, Premonition, and more.

While quietly battling with cancer, the actor had posted about his film, The Surfer, on Instagram. The late actor’s last post revealed how much he enjoyed the journey of making the film. “Just letting you know we have a great movie coming out, directed by Lorcan Finnegan. Its premiere is at SXSW, very exciting, and it’s in theaters May 2nd. It’s a psychological thriller, very unique, and very entertaining. I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it,” the actor wrote.
