Pokémon Voice Actor James Carter Cathcart Passes Away at 71

James Carter Cathcart, the beloved voice behind several of Pokemon’s characters, has died. The legendary actor brought life to Pokémon characters such as Professor Oak, Gary Oak, Team Rocket’s James, and the iconic Meowth for 25 years across 700+ episodes and 15 films.

Pokémon icon James Carter Cathcart has passed away after battling throat cancer. The voice actor’s wife notified fans of the tragic news via a Facebook group. She shared that Cathcart died on Tuesday, July 8, at the Calvary Hospital, in the Bronx.

She further revealed, “The funeral will be in early August in New York. Memorial designations are still in process, pending conversations with one of the charities that was close to Jimmy’s heart. I will post those here when they are in place.”

The post also mentioned the actor’s fans who have supported him throughout his decade-spanning career. “Thanks to all of Jimmy’s fans over the years! Giving you joy was why he worked so hard on his craft. Please know how much he appreciated you!”

Cathcart started his voice acting career in the 80s and continued till 2023. Apart from Pokemon, he voiced characters in Sonic X, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and several commercials, leaving an indelible mark on animation. Cathcart also famously worked on the 2005 video game, Shadow the Hedgehog.

The legendary voice actor’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow artists. Erica Schroeder, known for voicing characters in Shaman King and Pokémon’s Nurse Joy, delivered a heartfelt tribute on Instagram.

Schroeder wrote on Instagram, “Rest in peace dear sweet man. I will miss you. The community will miss you. The world will miss you. One of the most joyful, exuberant, kind-hearted and talented souls no longer walks with us.” The post further reads, “James Carter Cathcart you were one of a kind, a gentle, beautiful, playful genius and I was happy to call you my friend.”

Schroeder also celebrated Cathcart’s diverse talents beyond voice acting, describing him as a “master of the pen, piano and microphone.”
