During the July 10 episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg gave David Corenswet direct feedback about his performance as Superman in James Gunn’s new film, saying she was initially “annoyed” while watching him. “I’m thinking, ‘OK, OK, OK, this is all right.’ And, progressively, I felt myself getting annoyed,” Goldberg told Corenswet during his appearance alongside co-star Rachel Brosnahan. “And I couldn’t figure out what was happening, and what it was, was I forgot what kindness looked like”

Goldberg explained she had expected a quippy or sarcastic portrayal but realized Corenswet’s performance remained true to the character’s core. “I kept waiting for Superman to become quippy, and to get – and he’s not that, he’s never been that,” she said. “So I fell in love with you as Superman.”

She added that her emotional reaction made her reevaluate her expectations of superheroes. “Who have I become that I didn’t recognize the kindness?” she asked. “Why was I waiting for you to turn into somebody you have never been?” Goldberg also mentioned her friendship with late Superman actor Christopher Reeve and said the film reminded her of what made the character iconic.

Corenswet responded by sharing what it was like to have Christopher Reeve’s son Will on set. “That kind of encouragement coming from anybody who really means it genuinely — and then I got to sit down and talk with him a little bit about his dad, and his experience, and yeah, just an incredible experience to be able to link those,” he said.

He also discussed the challenge of wearing the Superman suit for the first time. “I must admit I had to muster some courage… you’re just out there. It’s just you in your tights. It can all go terribly wrong.”
