David Corenswet Reveals He Got Too Jacked for His Superman Costume

While every live-action rendition of Superman has seen actors working on their physical build before donning the red cape, David Corenswet, who plays the Man of Steel in the upcoming DCU flick, seemingly achieved a physique that made it difficult for him to fit into his costume. In a recent interview, the actor opened up about the troubles he faced while filming scenes in his super-suit for the James Gunn-helmed movie due to his bulky frame.

David Corenswet comments on his body and Superman costume

During a recent conversation, the Twisters star revealed how he prepared for the role of Kal-El.

David Corenswet noted to GQ, “I was aiming for about 4,500 calories a day. The gym was the first place I went to prepare.” However, the workout routine ended up making him too muscular for his costume, resulting in the 32-year-old thespian facing issues while enacting sequences.

Talking about the change he experienced when he started filming Superman, Corenswet stated, “All that training, so I couldn’t fit into my costume. They had built my costume based on my screen test measurements, where I was 6’4″ and 195 pounds, and then I showed up four months later, five months later, still 6’4″ but 240 pounds. So that first fitting was a bit of a squeeze.”

David Corenswet then doubled down on the problems he encountered due to this peculiar issue while shooting for Superman. He said, “There were always situations where things would work great in the fitting and then you would get on set…and you would realize that this great move that the stunt team or the fight choreographer had come up with, you just couldn’t do. I can’t move my arm in that way…I can’t lift my head up, and put my feet back, and all of these things.”

Despite everything, James Gunn’s Superman, which also features Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Isabela Merced, and Nathan Fillion, among others, is now set to premiere on the big screens on July 11, 2025.
