Superman’s David Corenswet talks about his audition tape
David Corenswet recently appeared in a GQ interview in which he elaborated on his casting as Superman in James Gunn’s new film. He also opened up about the research and training that shaped his performance and the inspiration behind his portrayal. During his description of the casting process, the 32-year-old actor admitted that he was unsure about playing the Man of Steel, as he “never thought it was an achievable goal.” He added that even while auditioning for the film, he didn’t believe he would land the part.
Corenswet shared that he was home changing a light fixture when he got the call to audition for Superman. He also learned he wouldn’t be meeting with James Gunn ahead of time and would self-tape like the other actors auditioning.
The Twisters actor said he performed the scene for his self-tape with his wife a few times for an hour, and did the scene again a couple of days later. He added that he did the scene “three times.” This is because he hoped he could find “something worthwhile.” Further, Corenswet said he ended up using “one of the takes” from his “very first session.”
Corenswet also mentioned he had spent one of the days leading up to the deadline to submit his tape watching past Superman films. He then revealed he had written a letter and sent it along with his audition tape.
“I wrote a letter, I sat right down and I wrote myself a letter,” he stated. “Addressed it to whom it may concern, you know, leaving open the possibility that no one would care, and so it would concern no one.”
He continued, “And I just laid out some of the thoughts that I had and the passion that I had for the possibilities of this character…”
“And I sent that along with my audition tape to whomever it concerned, and then I forgot about it,” he concluded.
