Jonathan Bailey talks about romance and Bridgerton

Jonathan Bailey offered his perspective on romance and dating during a recent interview. Known for his portrayal of Anthony Bridgerton on the hit Netflix series, the actor has clarified that it hasn’t influenced how he approaches relationships in real life.

Appearing on Chicken Shop Date to promote his latest film Jurassic World Rebirth, Bailey was asked by host Amelia Dimoldenberg if starring in Bridgerton had made him more skilled in romance. His response was direct, “No!” he said with a laugh. The actor also added, “It was a fantasy, isn’t it? Romance is grounded and real.”

During the same segment, Bailey lightheartedly imagined what Dimoldenberg’s role would be if she were cast in the Bridgerton world. He teased, “I can imagine you in Bridgerton. [Your character would be] really uptight. She’d be a sort of a potential spinster.”

Bailey has spoken previously about how the romance genre shaped his outlook. In a past interview with Entertainment Weekly, he explained how his views on romance stories have evolved, especially after being part of a show like Bridgerton. He said, “I’ve grown up with the idea of romance as a genre. It’s never been a genre that’s been given the respect and the international platform that Bridgerton has.”

Reflecting on his earlier impressions of romance, Bailey added, “My understanding of romance novels was that it was on the beach with a glass of rosé. But it makes sense. Sexuality, intimacy, and identity is everything.”

Jonathan Bailey is currently starring on the big screen in Jurassic World Rebirth. Later this year, he’ll appear as Fiyero in Wicked: For Good, set for release in the fall.
