David Corenswet talks about Nicholas Hoult getting Superman role
David Corenswet, who takes on the role of Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming DC Studios film, recently opened up about the audition process and his thoughts on fellow actor Nicholas Hoult. In an interview with GQ, Corenswet discussed the journey that led to his casting as Superman and acknowledged the talent of Hoult.
Reflecting on his reaction when he learned Hoult would also be screen-testing, Corenswet admitted, “I found out that Nick Hoult was gonna screen test, and I was like, ‘Well, I’d give it to Nick.’” He went on to express his admiration for Hoult, saying, “Every time I saw him, I thought, ‘I wanna be like him, and also I’ll never be like him.’”
David Corenswet elaborated on this by praising his Superman co-star Nicholas Hoult’s acting style. He said, “Like I could never be as facile and specific and charming an actor as he. But in some ways, that’s good news because then you go, well, if they give it to him, like, who can blame them?” Corenswet also noted that he had followed Hoult’s career closely for some time, adding that he had “sort of tracked all through his career.”
Hoult has previously voiced his appreciation for Corenswet, particularly during the promotion for the Superman film. Reflecting on the early stages of the casting process, Hoult revealed that he and Corenswet auditioned for the role of Superman on the same day.
Hoult said on Jimmy Kimmel Live, “I walked over to say hello. He stood up, and I was like, ‘Goddamn, he’s about an inch taller than me. Look at his hair, look at his jawline,’ and then he spoke, and I was like, ‘His voice is a little deeper too, he sounds like Superman.’”
