Anne Hathaway‘s role in Mother Mary is described as a combination of Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga. In a recent interview, the Academy Award winner spoke at length about playing the titular character in David Lowery’s upcoming film.
Anne Hathaway will play Taylor Swift-Lady Gaga hybrid type character
Anne Hathaway’s role in Mother Mary was described as “a sort of Gaga-Taylor Swift hybrid” in a recent Vogue cover story featuring the actress.
In her interview with the outlet, the 42-year-old opened up on her experience of bringing Mother Mary to life. She shared her realization of how she couldn’t simply “perform” as Mother Mary but also had to “become material David (Lowery) could craft with.” In addition, she explained that she not only had to undergo dance and singing training, as well as screaming sessions, but also had to change her mindset to that of a “beginner.”
“I had to submit to being a beginner,” Hathaway stated. “The humility of that—showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay.” She continued, “You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner. Getting to that mindset—I had to shed some things that were hard to shed.” The Devil Wears Prada star said that her mindset change “was welcome.” However, she noted that the change was “hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.”
Mother Mary, which does not have a release date as of writing, will be distributed by A24. Hathaway will co-star alongside Hunter Schafer, Jessica Brown Findlay, Michaela Coel, and Sian Clifford. Additionally, Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX will compose original songs for the film.
Furthermore, Hathaway confirmed via Instagram that filming had wrapped in late July 2024. She described the filmmaking experience as “extraordinary” and “transformative.”
After Mother Mary, Hathaway has four projects lined up, set to release in 2026. These include The Devil Wears Prada 2, Verity, The Odyssey, and Flowervale Street. The first two are expected to be released on May 1 and 15, respectively. Meanwhile, the latter two will hit theaters on July 17 and August 14, respectively.
