Their paths crossed at New York University. At the time, Karim was an undergraduate student, and Ali was pursuing an MFA. He mentioned on Death, Sex, and Money that he approached her with a poem written on a postcard. At first, he recalled being ignored but clarified that it all worked out in the end.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ali also revealed that after meeting Karim at the University, there was a 12-year gap. During this time, they weren’t in touch.
