Nicholas Hoult is drawing attention with his role as Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman film. While promoting the movie, Hoult shared a behind-the-scenes story that took an unexpected turn. During a podcast appearance, Nicholas Hoult revealed what happened when he asked Superman himself, David Corenswet, for a hug.

Here’s what Hoult said about the moment, his wife’s reaction, and why it stuck with him.

Nicholas Hoult shares his feeling about being held by David Corenswet

Nicholas Hoult appeared on the Armchair Expert podcast and shared a personal story. He revealed how it felt to be hugged by his Superman co-star David Corenswet.

Hoult explained, “I was chatting to my wife one night, and she was like, ‘It’s so nice to be held by someone bigger than you.’ And she was like, ‘You don’t really get that, do you?’ And I was like, ‘No, I guess I don’t.’” Standing at six feet, two and a half inches tall, Hoult said very few people are large enough to physically envelop him in an embrace.

His wife, Bryana Holly, then suggested that David Corenswet, who is six feet, four inches tall and bulked up to 238 pounds for the role, could be someone who fit the bill. Hoult followed through on the idea and later said that asking Corenswet for a hug turned into a surprising emotional moment. “It felt warm and safe to be held,” he said during the podcast, speaking about the experience.

Hoult and Corenswet both star in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman. Corenswet plays Superman, while Hoult portrays Lex Luthor. The film also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Nathan Fillion appears as Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced plays Hawkgirl. Gunn’s film marks the official beginning of the new DC Universe.

Hoult also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and recalled a moment from their audition process. He described seeing Corenswet bathed in sunlight and immediately thinking, “what the f—,” recognizing how perfectly he fit the Superman image. Corenswet later said casting Hoult as Lex Luthor was the best thing for the film.

The film will open in theaters on July 11, 2025.
