Zayn Malik on the Racism He Experienced in One Direction

Former One Direction star Zayn Malik recently hinted that he experienced racism when he was a member of the band. He shared a cryptic preview of his upcoming song “Fuchsia Sea.” Now, fans believe he’s finally addressing the band’s dark period that few people know about.

Zayn Malik’s new song reveals the racism he experienced

On July 5, Zayn Malik posted a teaser of a new rap track titled “Fuchsia Sea” on Instagram.

The lyrics immediately grabbed attention, not for their melody, but for what they appeared to reveal. Many fans believe Zayn Malik faced racism in the band because of a particular verse in which he raps, “I worked hard in a White band, and they still laughed at the Asian.”

Malik, who is of British-Pakistani descent, hinted that his ethnicity played a role in how he was treated while in One Direction. The band, which consisted of Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Zayn Malik, was formed in 2010 on The X Factor. Malik left the group in 2015, and while fans speculated for years about the reasons, this new song sheds light on personal struggles he may have faced due to racial bias.

In “Fuchsia Sea,” Zayn raps about feeling isolated and scrutinized. “Got my back against the wall so much they think I got a brick fascination / Do you remember every conversation? Cause I have been conscious of every connotation,” he raps.

He shared the music video in his post and the lyrics on Instagram Stories, sparking thousands of fans to search for “Zayn Malik ethnicity” to understand the context behind the song.

This upcoming song follows Malik’s heartfelt tribute to his former band, especially Liam Payne, at a Stairway to the Sky tour stop in Mexico City, where he performed “Night Changes” for the first time in a decade. “Thank you, that was f—–g amazing. I almost cried,” he told the crowd.
