Olivia Munn reveals her struggle with Trichotillomania
Olivia Munn candidly shared about the compulsive hair-pulling disorder called trichotillomania.
In a recent episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, the actress spoke about how the condition first took hold during her relationship with Chris Pine, and how the world of tabloid culture made it worse.
Munn explained that she pulled out her eyelashes and described the urge in detail. “There’s a sensation. It’s probably not even real, but I’ll feel like, ‘Oh, this eyelash feels like it’s gonna come out,’ even though it’s not,” she said. “And then when you pull it, there was a quick second of pain. And then there’s a satisfaction and then immediate regret.”
Olivia Munn traced the start of her Trichotillomania back to 2009, around the time she dated Chris Pine. She remembered asking The Daily Show costume team for “the ugliest dress” they had when attending a small event. “They found this blue old prom dress with big pom poms on the side. And I was like, ‘Oh, wonder if I can make it into the worst best dressed list?’” she said, laughing. “And then I did! I couldn’t believe it worked. The fact that I was like, they know who I am to even put me on this list. It was very exciting.”
After leaving Pine’s house at that time, paparazzi snapped pictures of her. The photos ended up online, and so did the comments. “And they were like, ‘I think she set this up. Who’s carrying a clutch during the day?’” Munn shared. “That began my trichotillomania.”
For the unversed, Trichotillomania is a mental health condition characterized by an irresistible urge to pull out hair, often from the scalp, eyebrows, or eyelashes.
