Pedro Pascal talks about how he wanted to become a nurse
Pedro Pascal has opened up about nearly quitting acting before achieving the success he enjoys today. In a revealing interview with Vanity Fair, the acclaimed actor admitted that during his 20s and 30s, he began considering other career paths.
Pascal said, “In my 30s, I was supposed to have a career. Past 29 without a career meant that it was over, definitely.” Feeling uncertain about his future, he began seriously considering attending nursing school or becoming a theater teacher. However, while Pascal was ready to walk away from acting, his family and friends never stopped believing in his talent.
His sister, Javiera Balmaceda, recalled how determined they were to keep him focused on his passion. Balmaceda said, “When Pedro would say, ‘I’m going to nursing school’ or ‘I’m going to be a theater teacher,’ it was just like ‘No, no, no, no! You’re too good!’” She further added, “He’s wanted to be an actor since he was four years old. The one thing we’d never allow Pedro to do was give up.”
Pascal also joked that had he followed through on becoming a nurse, things wouldn’t have gone well. The actor explained, “I’d be a selective nurse, like I was as a waiter. I’d fall in love with some patients and hate others. And that poor patient that I hated!”
Despite the self-doubt that once affected him, Pascal is now a well-known name in film and television, with roles in The Last of Us, The Fantastic Four, and Game of Thrones. Reflecting on how far he has come, the actor admitted that reaching age 50 brought unexpected vulnerability. He said, “What a silly thing for a 50-year-old man to have all this attention! This is such shadow-voice shit, you know what I mean?”
Most recently, Pascal starred in The Materialists alongside Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans.
