Pedro Pascal addresses his brutal Game of Thrones exit
Pascal reflected on his extensive career and the important projects he has been part of over the years during a recent interview with Vanity Fair. Game of Thrones inevitably came up during the discussion, prompting Pascal to speak on the horrifying death scene of his character and how that job impacted his overall career.
“Oh, it’s horrible,” Pascal said about Oberyn’s death, adding, “Those are my [Oberyn’s] teeth flying. This is perverse. That’s disgusting.” He then proceeded to explain how that scene was filmed. “As violent as it looks, he [Björnsson] was very gently pressing up against my eyes. You’d think his entire weight would be on me with that costume. I didn’t feel him at all. He held his weight. So we’re really just acting there,” Pascal stated.
He explained that Björnsson had tubes running through his costume “all the way to his thumbs” to pump fake blood. Notably, Oberyn died when the Mountain crushed his skull with his hands.
The SAG winner also said that prosthetics were used to show his smashed face in the show. According to The Mandalorian star, his appearance in Game of Thrones was a “game changer” and played an important role in his success. “I still can’t believe it happened, that David Benioff, D. B. Weiss [the creators of Game of Thrones] would take this chance. They could have had whoever they wanted,” he added.
Before Game of Thrones, Pascal primarily did theater work and appeared as supporting characters in various TV shows. Pascal mentioned this in the above-mentioned interview before noting that fellow actors Sarah Paulson and Amanda Peet helped him in getting his audition in front of Benioff and Weiss.
