The former couple’s legal saga began in 2016, after Heard accused Depp of domestic violence when filing for divorce. Eventually, a series of legal conflicts were sparked, culminating in a 2022 live-streamed trial. In this trial, intimate details of their relationship became public knowledge.
Here’s what Johnny Depp said about his trial with Amber Heard.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star recently gave an interview with The Sunday Times, in which he promoted the U.K. release of his latest directorial venture, Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness. When the outlet asked him about his highly publicized trial with Amber Heard and its impact on his personal life, Depp recalled three unnamed acquaintances who hurt him by doing him “dirty.”
“I’ll tell you what hurts, there are people, and I’m thinking of three, who did me dirty,” the actor stated. He noted that these three individuals attended his children’s parties and played with them by “throwing them in the air.” However, he expressed his understanding for those who did not “stand up” for him, noting their fear of “making the right choice.”
Depp also claimed that his experience was “pre-MeToo,” adding that he was a “crash test dummy” for the movement. He further mentioned that he “sponged” all the negative experiences he was facing.
“And so I wanted from the hundreds of people I’ve met in that industry to see who was playing it safe,” he added. “Better go woke!”
Johnny Depp also explained how the case went “far enough” and that he had to “semi-eviscerate” himself because of it.
“Everyone was saying, ‘It’ll go away!’ But I can’t trust that,” the 62-year-old added. “What will go away? The fiction pawned around the f—— globe? No, it won’t.”
The Edward Scissorhands actor stressed that he had to “represent the truth” or end up being guilty of “the acts” he was “accused of.” Depp added that he “didn’t feel nervous” the night before his trial with Heard in Virginia.
“If you don’t have to memorize lines, if you’re just speaking the truth? Roll the dice,” Depp said.
