Travis Kelce recently delved into his decision to return for another NFL season, admitting the choice was tough. Despite coming off a challenging year and approaching his mid-30s, the veteran tight end remains driven by unfinished business, particularly after the Chiefs’ disappointing Super Bowl loss.
Travis Kelce says he still has a lot to ‘prove’ in NFL
During a media session at the Chiefs’ minicamp on June 18, Kelce made it clear that retirement wasn’t on his mind. “It wasn’t a very tough [decision] for me,” Taylor Swift’s boyfriend said. “I know I’m getting older, but at the same time, I still feel like I got a lot that I can prove in this league. It really wasn’t that hard of a decision for me.”
Kelce emphasized his love for the game and the camaraderie within the Chiefs organization as important factors in his return. “I love football. I don’t think I really thought about it that much,” he added. “My friends and family, the team, the guys and women in this building—I love coming into work every single day.”
Moreover, the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in February left Travis Kelce with a burning desire to redeem himself. He admitted feeling like he “failed” in both performance and leadership during the championship game.
“Last year, I think I failed, especially in that last game, in being a leader and being the one that can step up and make plays,” Kelce said. “So just setting the bar even higher for myself this year than I have in the past. Last year wasn’t a success for me, and I’m motivated to make sure we get that other ring this year.” (via People)
Statistically, 2024 was one of Travis Kelce’s least productive seasons, with only 832 receiving yards and three touchdowns, which is his lowest numbers since his rookie year. Rather than seeing this as a sign to retire, however, he views it as fuel to come back stronger.
