Wondering what sparked Wendy Williams’ “money-grubber” comment about her ex-husband Kevin Hunter and how it ties into a $250 million lawsuit? A surprise legal filing, guardianship battles, and resurfaced tensions have drawn Williams back into the headlines.
Here’s why she’s slamming Hunter’s actions and distancing herself from the lawsuit filed in her name.
Wendy Williams breaks silence on legal filing by ex-husband
Wendy Williams has publicly distanced herself from a $250 million lawsuit filed by her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter.
The suit targets her court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, and Judge Lisa Sokoloff. Speaking to TMZ on June 19, 2025, Williams said she had “no idea” about the lawsuit and emphasized, “Nor do I want him to be a part of my life like that, no… I’m divorced forever.”
Filed on June 17 in New York federal court, the lawsuit seeks compensatory damages and Williams’ release from “involuntary confinement.” It also demands the “unsealing of her case files” and the removal of Morrissey as her guardian. It names 48 defendants, including Wells Fargo and Williams’ assisted living facility. According to the complaint, Hunter also wants the court to appoint him as Williams’ “next friend,” which would let him act on her behalf in legal matters.
Williams’ attorney, Joe Tacopina, told People that she “absolutely didn’t” know about the filing and “is not happy about it.” Tacopina added, “He has no standing to add her name [to the lawsuit] or no authority from Wendy whatsoever… we certainly don’t need his help if we want to file a lawsuit.”
LaShawn Thomas, Hunter’s attorney, acknowledged that Williams did not participate in the lawsuit. Thomas said, “Unfortunately, she is not legally aware of all the evidence that supports our claims that she should not be forced to suffer from this guardianship.”
Williams divorced Hunter after 21 years together. In 2022, the court placed Williams under a guardianship order. Her medical team confirmed in February 2024 that she had primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia.
Despite the diagnosis, Williams appeared on The Breakfast Club in January 2024 and said, “I am not cognitively impaired but I feel like I am in prison.”
