Chris Evans Admits Feeling ‘Scared’ About Dakota Johnson Not Liking Him

Chris Evans recently opened up about an unexpectedly awkward dynamic between him and his Materialists co-star Dakota Johnson. While their on-screen chemistry may appear cute, the Captain America actor admitted he was initially “scared” that Johnson wouldn’t like him, based on something she said long before they worked together.

While promoting their new romantic comedy, Materialists, Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson sat down with Access Hollywood to share behind-the-scenes stories. Evans jokingly called their on-screen chemistry a “testament to performance,” adding, “Cause real nightmare over here, it’s a disaster, never again.” To which Johnson also chimed in, “We hate each other. I think he’s a piece of s**t.”

Later on, Evans revealed that it wasn’t the case, rather “it was a dream.” However, he did admit to what first impression he had about Dakota Johnson after she asked him to tell the “dumb story.” It turns out that the Fifty Shades of Grey actress once said she didn’t like his face in an earlier interview. “Dakota said she didn’t like my face in an interview in years prior,” he shared with a laugh. “I was scared that Dakota wouldn’t like me. I just thought Dakota was this really cool person, and I don’t know why, I just got an idea like, she’s going to meet me, and got a vibe that she wasn’t going to like me.”

Evans added that despite his initial worries, he quickly realized Johnson was “effortlessly cool” and “doesn’t take herself too seriously.” The two clearly moved past any awkwardness, as their playful banter during the interview confirmed their strong off-screen bond.

In Materialists, Johnson plays Lucy, a high-end matchmaker who runs into her ex-boyfriend John, played by Evans, the same night she meets her supposed ideal partner, Pedro Pascal’s Harry. The film takes a refreshing approach to modern romance, steering away from stereotypical tropes of male rivalry.
