Born on November 5, 1937, in Los Angeles, Yulin began his acting career in New York City’s theater scene. He made his stage debut in 1963 in Next Time I’ll Sing to You and appeared on Broadway in productions including Watch on the Rhine, The Price, The Visit, and Hedda Gabler.
Yulin made his film debut in 1970 with End of the Road and Maidstone. He later appeared in a wide range of roles, including Multiplicity, Training Day, Game 6, and Candy Mountain. In television, he had recurring roles in Ozark, Billions, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Veep, and Frasier, for which he earned an Emmy nomination in 1996.
Yulin was preparing to begin filming American Classic with Kevin Kline and Laura Linney in the weeks before his death. Director Michael Hoffman said, “Harris Yulin was very simply one of the greatest artists I have ever encountered.” Hoffman added, “He will always remain the beating heart of our show.”
He also had an extensive directing career. His credits included The Glass Menagerie, The Trip to Bountiful, and This Lime Tree Bower. He taught acting at The Juilliard School, Columbia University, and HB Studios.
Yulin lived on Long Island and frequently performed with actress Mercedes Ruehl. He had recently worked on projects with Stacy Keach.
