More than two decades after Mean Girls‘ release, Amanda Seyfried is calling out Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the film. In a recent conversation with Adam Brody, Seyfried claimed that the company continues to make money off the film’s merchandise without paying her.
Amanda Seyfried says Paramount owes her money for Mean Girls merch
Amanda Seyfried has criticized Paramount Pictures for allegedly cashing in on Mean Girls merchandise while cutting her out of the profits. In a recent Variety “Actors on Actors” interview with Adam Brody, the actress reflected on the film’s popularity.
When Brody brought up the 2004 teen comedy, Seyfried said she hasn’t rewatched it. The actress said, “No, I haven’t. It’s on often enough, though. And you know what? I love it.” She added with a laugh, “I really love seeing my face on people’s T-shirts. I mean, I’m a little resentful because Paramount still owes me some money.”
Her remark caught Brody off guard. “For the T-shirts?” he asked. Seyfried clarified, “For the likeness.” She then added, “Every store sells Mean Girls T-shirts with our faces on [them]. Photographs!” Seyfried then wondered aloud if her age at the time had something to do with the lack of compensation. She said, “Is it because I was 17 and dumb?”
Nevertheless, the actress expressed gratitude to fans and the film’s cast, which also included Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, and Lacey Chabert, among many others. Seyfried also reflected on a recent encounter with a TSA agent who told her Mean Girls was her favorite movie. She said, “I’m like, ‘Great, I was seven (teen), I had nothing to do with it.’”
Mean Girls was a massive commerical success and also garnered high priase from critics, with many praising the performances, writing, and direction, among numerous other things. It is widely considered to be one of the finest comedy movies of the 2000s.
