Chris Evans recently revisited his proposal to his wife, Alba Baptista, revealing that he had spent days practicing how to propose in Portuguese, Baptista’s native language. However, it nearly backfired. Now, many fans are curious to know what happened.
Chris Evans thought he messed up his Portuguese proposal
Chris Evans has offered a rare glimpse into his private life, revealing the way he prepared to propose to his now-wife, Alba Baptista. While walking the red carpet at the New York City premiere of his upcoming film Materialists on June 7, the actor spoke to The Knot on the red carpet, sharing a behind-the-scenes story about his proposal.
In a video shared to TikTok by the outlet, Evans explained that because Baptista is Portuguese, he wanted to ask her to marry him in her native language. He said, “Maybe I shouldn’t even be saying this. I proposed to my wife — she’s Portuguese — so I learned how to say, ‘Will you marry me?’ in Portuguese. I had practiced all week.”
But despite all the preparation, Evans said the rehearsing nearly gave away his plans. He explained, “I had practiced it so much that while I’d be making breakfast, you almost just start saying it out loud and you’re like ‘Oh God! It’s going to let the cat out of the bag!’” Despite the preparation, he admitted that nerves got the better of him when it finally came time to propose. He added, “I actually think I screwed it up. But I still know it!”
Although the couple has mostly kept their romance out of the spotlight, several outlets reported in November 2022 that they had been dating for over a year at that time. In September 2023, Evans and Baptista reportedly tied the knot in a private ceremony held in Cape Cod. However, the couple didn’t make a formal announcement. Evans later confirmed the news publicly during an appearance at New York Comic Con in October 2023.
