Jonathan Groff stole the show at the 2025 Tony Awards when he leaped into the audience and straddled Keanu Reeves mid-performance. The hilarious and unexpected moment instantly went viral, becoming one of the night’s biggest highlights.
Keanu Reeves joins in as Jonathan Groff straddles him at 2025 Tony Awards
During his high-energy medley from Just in Time, the Bobby Darin bio-musical, Jonathan Groff ditched the Tony Awards stage and made a beeline for Keanu Reeves, his Matrix Resurrections co-star. Without missing a beat, he planted one foot on each armrest of Reeves’ seat, straddling the action star while belting out the final notes of his performance.
Reeves, ever the good sport, laughed and threw up rock-and-roll hands for the cameras. The crowd went wild as the camera zoomed in, showing Reeves’ grinning face perfectly framed between Groff’s legs. The unexpected reunion delighted fans, who last saw the two together in The Matrix Resurrections, where Reeves reprised Neo and Groff took on the role of Agent Smith.
The performance was part of a tribute to Bobby Darin, featuring hits like “Mack the Knife,” “That’s All,” and “Once in a Lifetime.” Groff currently stars in the Broadway show about Darin’s life and has a Tony nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. The show, directed by Alex Timbers, received six Tony nods overall and opened in April at Circle in the Square Theatre.
“It’s meant so much,” Groff said in May at a press event. “We’ve been developing this Bobby Darin musical for eight years now… It’s been such a long road to get here, and every night at the theater feels like a gift.” (via People)
Meanwhile, Reeves, who presented at the 2025 Tony Awards, is gearing up for his Broadway debut in Waiting for Godot alongside Bill & Ted co-star Alex Winter. It’s a revival of Samuel Beckett’s version of the same name.
