Why Is ‘Taylor Swift 300 Million’ Trending Amid Music Deal?

Fans want to know the meaning behind the “Taylor Swift 300 million” trend, as many speculate if it has to do with her buying back her music. On May 30, the 14-time Grammy winner announced that she has bought back all of her first six albums’ master recordings from Shamrock Capital.

There has not been an official announcement regarding the price that Swift spent to purchase the ownership of her music. However, speculation says that it could be somewhere around $300 million.

‘Taylor Swift 300 Million’ trend explained

Fans believe Taylor Swift spent more than $300 million to buy back her original music catalog from Shamrock Capital, leading to the “Taylor Swift 300 Million” trend online.

Longtime followers remember that Swift’s contract with Big Machine Records ended in 2018. Under Big Machine, Swift had released her first six albums, which then became a property of the music label.

The label was acquired by Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings later, granting Braun ownership of Swift’s albums as well. In 2020, an investment firm, Shamrock Capital, bought those rights from Braun. As per reports, Scooter Braun had spent over $300 million on purchasing Swift’s music.

After over half a decade of waiting, Swift has finally bought back the ownership of her catalog from Shamrock Capital. In a personal letter to fans, she revealed, “All of the music I’ve ever made… now belongs… to me. And all my music videos. All the concert films.
The album art and photography. The unreleased songs. The memories. The magic. The madness. Every single era.”

While the price that Swift had to pay to gain the rights to her music is not public, sources say that it is close to $300 million. A Variety report quoted a source who noted that the “extravagant $600 million to $1 billion” price was not accurate. It could be leaning more towards $300 million.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift has also shared an update regarding the re-recording of her 2017 album, Reputation. The singer revealed she had not “re-recorded a quarter of it.” The hitmaker noted that she might release the “Vault tracks” in the future.
