What did Nick Kroll say about John Mulaney?

Nick Kroll recently discussed the challenging experience of helping stage a drug intervention for John Mulaney during the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Kroll opened up about how emotional and difficult that time was. He explained that organizing the intervention was “incredibly stressful,” especially with the pandemic restrictions, his wife being pregnant, and his own filming schedule.

Kroll said that he was deeply afraid for Mulaney’s life, recalling late-night phone calls where both men broke down in tears. The comedian said, “John was running around New York City like a true madman, and I was so deeply scared he was gonna die.” While he sympathized with Mulaney’s struggle, Kroll admitted that he also felt a lot of anger. Post the intervention, Mulaney entered rehab.

Kroll also spoke about how he reacted to Mulaney’s post-rehab comedy material. He admitted feeling uneasy with how the intervention was presented onstage. He told Mulaney that the portrayal didn’t sit right with him back then, and Mulaney was open to the feedback. However, Kroll emphasized that he respected Mulaney’s choice to share his experiences through his stand-up. He said, “Everyone’s process and art is different. So, what he’s willing to share is what makes him so f—ing funny and dynamic and intoxicating as a performer.”

In earlier interviews, Mulaney has spoken about the people who helped him get into rehab. In 2023, he told Jimmy Kimmel that he didn’t realize it was an intervention at first. He just thought that he was going to dinner with his two friends. In 2024, he revealed that his wife, Olivia Munn, also helped with smaller interventions once they learned she was pregnant.
