Curious as to why Ed Sheeran’s Game of Thrones cameo stirred such a strong reaction? His cameo in GOT still sparks debate years later. Recently, Sheeran opened up about the backlash, addressing it during a revealing lie-detector segment in a Vanity Fair interview.
Here’s what Sheeran said about his role.
Ed Sheeran talks about Game of Thrones cameo
In Vanity Fair’s lie detector interview, Ed Sheeran candidly reflected on his controversial Game of Thrones appearance. The interviewer didn’t hold back, asking if Sheeran was finally ready to discuss the criticism he received. “Of course, yeah. I’ve been ready to talk about it since the first day,” he replied without hesitation.
Sheeran, a longtime fan of the show, accepted the offer immediately. “I’m a big Game of Thrones fan, and when they asked me to cameo, I said yes. I imagine anyone else in the same situation would’ve done the same thing,” he explained. With only two lines in the episode, Sheeran didn’t expect his appearance to draw such intense scrutiny.
When pressed further on whether he thought the cameo felt intrusive, Sheeran replied, “I think at the time, I was very overexposed, and people hated me anyway. But yeah, there’s loads of pop stars that have been in Games of Thrones as cameos.”
Ed Sheeran’s Game of Thrones cameo became a lightning rod for criticism. When asked if he believes fans will ever forgive him, Sheeran offered a realistic perspective. “Like, maybe. As I’ve said, there’s [are] a lot of people in the world. 50% of the people who know my music like it, 50% absolutely hate it. There’s no one in the middle that’s indifferent. So yeah, it’s very polarizing. So the people who really hate me are never gonna forgive me. And the people that like me, don’t care,” he said.
In a lighter moment, Sheeran revealed his next potential role: “I’ve been asked to be a sheep in a Disney film,” he laughed.
For those unfamiliar, Sheeran’s Game of Thrones cameo in 2017 received fierce online backlash. One user tweeted, “Ed Sheeran appearing on game of thrones but not being brutally disemboweled was very disappointing.” Another sarcastically complained about Sheeran’s omnipresence on the radio and now even in Westeros.
Following the controversy, Sheeran temporarily deleted his Twitter (now X) account. Although fans speculated it was due to the backlash, he clarified via Instagram that it was planned. “I came off Twitter Coz I was always intending to come off Twitter, had nothing to do with what people said about my game of thrones cameo,” he stated.
