The Anyone But You actress arrived at the Met Gala 2025, sporting a custom black Miu Miu gown that had short sleeves and fringe detailing. The dress also had a cutout on her chest area, held together by a golden flower.
Sydney Sweeney also styled her hair in a chic slick back bun with two curls covering portions of her forehead. She then completed the look with glittering De Beers diamonds and a 9-carat ring. According to a De Beers brand release, Sweeney had designed and purchased the 9-carat ring by herself (via People).
Unfortunately, this look drew mixed to negative reactions from fans. They expressed criticism at the actress’ attire not matching the event’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” — which explored the concept of dandyism and the importance of style to Black identities’ formation in the Atlantic region, primarily the United States and Europe.
“Sydney Sweeney referencing Kim Novak, a white lady, for superfine tailoring black style….ok?” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Meanwhile, another fan wrote, “They gave Sydney Sweeney the wrong invitation. it’s the met gala, not the golden globes.”

Per People, Sydney Sweeney revealed in an interview with Vogue that her Met Gala look was inspired by renowned actress Kim Novak. She teased this look with a picture of Novak in an Instagram story before the event.
Sweeney is set to play Novak in the upcoming film, Scandalous! This film will be directed by Colman Domingo, who co-chaired this year’s Met Gala. It is expected to explore the controversial romantic relationship between Novak and late 50s boulevardier, Sammy Davis Jr.
