The 95-year-old actor died from cardiovascular complications linked to both high blood pressure and hardened arteries. Alzheimer’s disease was also listed as a significant underlying condition.

The report provided further detail about Hackman’s health in his final days, revealing a history of heart failure, evidence of impaired kidney function, and signs of cognitive decline consistent with Alzheimer’s. Toxicology tests showed a small amount of acetone in his system, which medical professionals associate with extended periods without food.
The couple were discovered dead on February 26, along with one of their three dogs. Hackman was discovered in the mudroom, next to a walking cane and a pair of sunglasses. Investigators suspect he collapsed unexpectedly. Records from his pacemaker showed its last activity was on February 17.
Arakawa, who had been her husband’s main caregiver, was found in the bathroom. Scattered nearby were pills later identified as medications for thyroid issues, pain relief, and blood pressure management. Officials believe she died roughly a week before Hackman. Her last known appearance was on February 11 while running errands. After that date, there were no further signs of communication from either of them.
