Earlier in the month, The New York Times reported that pneumonia was the likely cause of his death, after confirmation from Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes Kilmer. He is also survived by his son Jack, whom he shared with his ex-wife, actress Joanne Whalley.

Following his passing, Kilmer’s family issued a heartfelt public statement. The statement read, “Thank you for honoring our extraordinary father’s memory. We are so proud of him and honored to see his legacy celebrated. At this time, we would like to grieve privately.”

Val Kilmer’s career in Hollywood spanned over four decades. He was best known for his role as Iceman in Top Gun (1986), and he reprised the role in Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Despite serious health setbacks, including two tracheotomies following his 2014 cancer diagnosis, Kilmer continued to work. He also appeared in acclaimed films like Heat, Tombstone, The Ghost and the Darkness, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and The Prince of Egypt.
