Mayor of Boston names April 10 as Ayo Edebiri Day
Ayo Edebiri, the breakout star of The Bear, visited the Boston Latin School on April 10 and held a Q&A with students. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu accompanied the actress and recognized her impact on Boston youth. Ultimately, Wu declared April 10 as the Ayo Edebiri Day in Boston.
Wu said, “It was a true delight to speak with award-winning actor, comedian, writer, producer, and Dorchester girl Ayo Edebiri. The mayor also hailed the Boston public schooling system and the city that helped Edebiri in navigating her creative life (via Boston City TV).
Edibri was visibly surprised at the honor as she asked, “What’s happening?” Covering her face in embarrassment, she exclaimed, “Is a thing about to happen?” Speaking with Wu, Edebiri also looked back at her high school life. “This is very surreal. I sort of envy you guys getting out of class for this,” the actress said.
The 29-year-old also provided insight on her high school life which shaped her adult life. The Dorchester native gushed over how bonding with a group of diverse students from “every neighborhood and walk of life” prepared her for the “real world.”
Edibri explained, “By the time I was ready to go to college, I felt ready to meet the world.” She added, “I’m from public schools, pre-K to 12. I’m from a system that was funded, that works. Public services work.”
Edebiri has earned multiple accolades for her portrayal of Sydney Adamu in The Bear. She won a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award for her phenomenal performance.
Apart from The Bear, Edebiri starred in Netflix’s Black Mirror Season 6 in the episode “Joan is Awful.” She also starred in the mockumentary sitcom Abbott Elementary in 2023 along with a star-studded cast.
