According to the LAPD, officers were investigating a three-car hit-and-run when three suspects fled the scene, prompting a search in the surrounding residential area. Police stated that Lauren emerged from her home holding a handgun and was ordered “numerous times” to drop it. “She refused and pointed the gun at officers,” the LAPD reported. Officers then opened fire, striking her with a non-life-threatening injury.

Police shot Lauren, who then ran back into her residence. Minutes later, she and a babysitter walked out of the house with their hands raised and surrendered. Officers recovered a nine-millimeter handgun at the scene. They transported Lauren to the hospital for treatment and later booked her for attempted murder.

Lauren, 51, is a New York Times bestselling author who wrote Some Girls: My Life in a Harem and investigated serial killer Samuel Little. She married Weezer bassist Scott Shriner in 2005, and they have two adopted children. Although she played no role in the hit-and-run, she became the focus of the police operation after the armed standoff. Police confirmed that they detained, cited, and released one male suspect from the hit-and-run while two others remain unaccounted for.

Footage from KTLA showed Lauren and her babysitter surrendering and police stationed outside the Shriner residence. The incident occurred just days before Weezer’s scheduled Coachella performance. Police confirmed that Lauren’s injury was non-fatal, and she remains under investigation.
