Meghan Markle reveals her battle with postpartum preeclampsia in her new podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. The Duchess of Sussex’s Lemonada Media series spotlights women entrepreneurs who have transformed modest concepts into thriving businesses. The first guest, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble’s founder, joins Markle in the podcast. They discuss their shared experience with the serious pregnancy complication, which the former actress describes as “scary.”
What did Meghan Markle share about postpartum preeclampsia?
Suits star Meghan Markle is candid about a rare condition she experienced after giving birth. Specifically, she opened up about postpartum preeclampsia. For the uninitiated, postpartum preeclampsia is a condition that can develop shortly after childbirth. It involves high blood pressure and excess protein in the mother’s urine. As per Mayo Clinic, “Preeclampsia is a similar condition that develops during pregnancy and typically resolves with the birth of the baby.”
In Markle’s new podcast, the former TV actress tells her close friend and successful entrepreneur, Whitney Wolfe Herd, how both of them faced the same condition. Markle reveals, “It’s so rare and so scary.
And you’re still trying to juggle all of these things, and the world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly. And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people — mostly for your children — but those things are huge medical scares.”
Wolfe Herd chimes in, sharing the huge consequences of the condition. She says, “I mean life or death, truly.” However, Markle did not specify which pregnancy was affected by the condition. Specifically, she didn’t mention whether it occurred during Prince Archie’s birth or Princess Lilibet’s.
Along with the struggles of postpartum preeclampsia, Wolfe Herd also talked about Markle’s time living with the royals. They recalled the moment when she had to “debut” her first child just days after giving birth.
Wolfe Herd shares, “I mean, I’ll never forget the image of you after you delivered Archie, and the whole world was waiting for his debut.” She added, “I was either just becoming or about to become a new mom, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, how is this woman doing this? How is this woman putting on heels and going and debuting a child in this, you know, beautiful outfit in front of the entire world?'”
