Chadwick Boseman’s Death Had a Big Impact on Michael B. Jordan

Ryan Coogler recently talked about Chadwick Boseman and how the latter’s death in 2020 from colon cancer deeply affected Michael B. Jordan. The trio worked together in 2018’s Black Panther, although Coogler and Jordan collaborated on Fruitvale Station and Creed before that.

So, here’s what the filmmaker said about Boseman and the latter’s death affecting him and Jordan.

Ryan Coogler shares how Chadwick Boseman’s death affected Michael B. Jordan

Ryan Coogler sat down for an interview, discussing a plethora of topics like his and Michael B. Jordan’s new film, Sinners, and Nipsey Hussle. The topic of Chadwick Boseman came up during this discussion, leading to the Academy Award nominee shedding some light on the actor’s passing and how it affected Jordan.

“Out of all my actors, Chad’s death actually hit Mike (Jordan) the hardest,” Coogler explained to The Breakfast Club. He then called Boseman “a fully baked man from the South.” This was because the late actor was born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina.

The director further described Boseman as “an old school man’s man.” Coogler mentioned that when he and Michael B. Jordan worked together with the deceased star, they felt like “kids.” The filmmaker explained how Boseman was like a “teacher” to him and Jordan, teaching them various lessons “by example.” Moreover, he recalled not realizing he was learning a lesson when being “taught.”

The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director then mentioned how Chadwick Boseman worked at an “old-school” pace and took his time with his work, but “was always early” on set. Coogler added that Michael B. Jordan would attest to the fact that the late actor “never broke action” when performing.

Additionally, Coogler recalled a time when a Disney executive visited the set of Black Panther during filming, and while Boseman was still in character. He noted that the executive was taken aback when the actor spoke in T’Challa’s native Wakandan accent. Coogler recalled telling the executive, “Don’t be freaked out, he working man. He don’t turn it off till we wrap.”

Ryan Coogler then mentioned how Chadwick Boseman’s work ethic and commitment to his craft inspired him and Michael B. Jordan to “lock in” when filming Sinners.
