Selena Gomez Reacts to ‘Weight’ Comments: ‘I’m Not a Victim’

Selena Gomez recently addressed the criticism around her weight during a podcast appearance, revealing how the scrutiny affects her and why she’s speaking out. Her candid remarks have reignited conversations around body image, double standards, and public pressure.

What did Selena Gomez say about weight comments?

Selena Gomez has opened up about the emotional toll of constant comments on her weight. She expressed frustration with the double standards women face. On the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, she spoke alongside her fiancé, Benny Blanco.

Gomez shared that she feels “a tad bitter” when her body becomes a topic of public discussion. “Everyone just has something to say and it’s really making me sad and — not even sad ‘cause, I’m not a victim, everyone — I just think it’s made me a tad bitter and I feel really guilty for saying that but it’s true.”

She further shared, “Nobody cares about these kinds of things with men.” The actress also added that scrutiny over appearance is far more intense for women. The 32-year-old has been open about her health struggles. She lives with lupus, an autoimmune disease that requires medication which can cause weight fluctuations. “I would rather be healthy and take care of myself,” she said. “My medications are important… I’m not a model, never will be.”

Gomez described the pressure she feels when attending public events, sharing that her main thought is often, “I just hope I can take the picture and sit down.” While she actively avoids having social media on her phone, she admitted that negative comments sometimes still reach her. “I fall victim to looking at things,” she confessed. “It doesn’t add anything to your life.”

In addition to criticism about her weight, Gomez shared that she is often judged for not being “white enough” or “Mexican enough,” highlighting the broader issue of identity-based scrutiny faced by women of color in the public eye.

Despite the negativity, Gomez remains grounded by support from those close to her, especially Benny Blanco. “He’s saying it because he believes it, and that makes me feel good,” she said.
