Fans speculate that John Turturro, who portrays Irving Bailiff in Apple TV’s Severance, might be leaving the show after Season 2. The pivotal character departed town under mysterious circumstances when Burt, tasked with presumably eliminating him, instead granted freedom with one crucial condition: Irving’s destination must remain unknown.
WARNING: Spoilers below!
Could John Turturro’s Irving be exiting Severance?
Severance fans believe John Turturro has hinted at leaving Severance after the completion of Season 2. In an interview with Variety, Turturro previously said, “I didn’t like being in that office — the light there drove me insane. I did my second go round, but I feel like I’ve had a full meal.”
Plotwise, Jame Eagans told Helena in Severance 2 Episode 9, “We’re seeing Mr. Bailiff.” The simple sentence had a chilling implication as Burt reaches Irving’s house next. From Burt’s conversation with Irving, one thing becomes clear. The former has done this “job” before. Upon Lumon’s instructions, he has helped the evil company get rid of the people whose existence became threatening.
But with Irving, Burt could not do the same. Instead, he urged the severed employee to get on a train and leave Lumon’s hold forever. Under any circumstances, Burt can not have knowledge of Irving’s destination.
In another way, Irving has also served his purpose. His Outtie’s knowledge of the Export Hall ultimately helped Mark rescue Gemma. Viewers still don’t know how Outtie Irving knew about the Export Hall, and only if he returns in Season 3 that fans might find answers.
Will Irving be back in Severance Season 3?
Despite speculations, many believe John Turturro might actually return to Severance Season 3. His Outtie’s extensive knowledge of Lumon employees and the Export Hall signify that he knows more than meets the eye. Turturro recently talked to The Wrap and teased viewers about his fate in Severance.
The 68-year-old actor said, “When you’re doing scenes at the end of the season, it’s always tricky to find that sweet spot.” He added, “Because you think it could be the end, but it maybe it’s not the end.”
Irving’s possible return in Severance Season 3 could supercharge the Lumon resistance. Armed with insider knowledge from Ms. Cobel and Gemma, this powerhouse trio might finally have what it takes to dismantle the sinister corporation once and for all.
