Redford and Martin appear in the first episode of Dark Winds Season 3 in cameo roles as two criminals in prison. This marks Redford’s first acting role in six years.
While Redford’s character’s name is unknown, Martin plays George. The two are seen playing chess in the jail, and George checkmate Redford with the help of Officer Leaphorn. Redford sarcastically thanked Leaphorn for his move in the game.
Director Chris Eyre revealed in an interview with Vulture, that the idea for the cameos of Martin and Redford has been “in the air since the first season.” According to the outlet, Redford requested the cameo scene to be shot on a closed set. Eyre also shared his experience of working with The Sting actor, stating:
“I’ve known Bob for decades, and just to be sitting there going, Oh, I’m gonna direct Robert Redford, struck fear in me. Bob is so kind and he was so nice on the day, and so was George. But I remember Zahn turning to me when we were about to start shooting and he goes, ‘You’re doing a scene with Robert Redford, that’s incredible,’ and I said, ‘Zahn, will you be quiet? You’re making me nervous.'”
