Brian Baumgartner’s The Office cameo in Suits LA explained

Brian Baumgartner appears as himself in Suits LA’s latest episode, titled “He Knew.” Here, he is portrayed as Ted Black’s client, and Erica and Leah are assigned to meet with him to sort his problems out. Upon meeting Erica, Baumgartner expresses his desire to get rid of his famous The Office role, Kevin Malone. He notes that while he is thankful for the role, as it gave him everything, it has led to him being typecast.

Baumgartner then states his desire to transition from comedic roles to dramatic roles that are “Oscar-worthy.” In response, Erica tells him that such a transition has never taken place in the history of Hollywood.

Baumgartner then points out how big names like Tom Hanks, Jamie Foxx, and the late Robin Williams did it. Erica initially notes how they are exceptions, then mentions that Hanks is a client at Black’s firm, prompting Baumgartner to ask her to set up a meeting with the Forrest Gump star.

However, Baumgartner eventually gets set up with Patton Oswalt. Unfortunately, for both, they get into an intense argument, where Oswalt disses The Office. Baumgartner then angrily exits the office and confronts Erica, threatening to fire her if she does not meet his demands next time. Later, it’s revealed that Erica had Oswalt bait Baumgartner into their fight. This is so The Office star could take the initiative to put himself out for dramatic roles.

Erica’s scheme was successful, as Baumgartner managed to get a lead role for an off-Broadway play.
