The internet went kablooey today as news broke that Tina Fey was developing a long-long-long-awaited sequel to the cult favorite Hocus Pocus. But that’s a lie. She’s only developing an all-new witch-related comedy in the vein of Ghostbusters for Disney.
Dang it?
We sure do live in strange times when audiences are complaining that an upcoming movie ISN’T a sequel to a nostalgic favorite (which wasn’t even all that popular when it originally came out). Maybe Disney will perk up their ears and realize that Hocus Pocus has enough fans to start exploiting as a potential cash cow, and dress up young aspiring actresses in Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker costumes and let them wander around their theme parks. Or actually greenlight that sequel after all. Or worse, reboot the danged thing.

In the meantime though, we have Tina Fey – one of our most talented comedians (and not for nothing, a solid writer and actress to boot) – developing something new and, hopefully, special in a popular genre. No details have emerged about the project’s title or specific premise, but as long as someone there’s an homage to the broomstick scene in Witching and Bitching we’ll be happy.
