Resolution Gate has been all the rage in the gaming community since before the next-gen battle even started. The PS4’s GDDR5 powered hardware has produced some incredibly realistic visuals in 1080p, visuals that some argue the Xbox One can never achieve. Whether or not that’s true is up for debate, but some developers have already shunned the battle of resolution, including Titanfall‘s producer.
Speaking to GameSpot at PAX East, Titanfall producer Drew McCoy shared his viewpoint on the resolution war between Xbox One and PS4, stating:
It’s the console wars. It’s Sega does what Nintendon’t,There’s going to be games that look better on one or the other. There’s going to be exclusives that look better, for whatever reason. And we never set out to engage in the tech war. I feel like that’s a war that no one actually wins.
The problem is, the Xbox One hasn’t had a multiplatform game that looks better than on PS4. Some argued that Thief looked better on Xbox One due to better texture filtering, but the differences were minimal, and in that example the PS4 ran it at a higher resolution anyway.
However, there are two things that can drastically change the course of the battle. For one, Microsoft recently announced its support of DirectX 12 on Xbox One. According to several sources, the software may have huge implications for the Xbox One’s efficiency.
Secondly, the Xbox One’s ESRAM is a high potential architecture that hasn’t been fully tapped into, yet. Microsoft has stated on numerous occasions that as developers become more familiar with the structure, games will look a lot better, potentially even driving into 1080p as Forza Motorsport 5 did at launch.
Nonetheless, the long awaited resolution patch for Titanfall is still in development. Respawn plans to improve the visual presentation of the game with a big update. How much of a difference it’ll make and when it’ll arrive is still unknown.
