Bridgerton Author Reveals Mistake She Didn’t Want Netflix To Make in Season 4

Julia Quinn has revealed new details about her involvement in Netflix’s Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1. She explained that Season 4 largely follows her novel An Offer From a Gentleman. However, there was one storyline she urged the creative team to handle carefully.

As Netflix continues expanding Bridgerton, author Julia Quinn has offered rare details about her involvement. Quinn, who created the original novel series, serves as a consultant on the adaptation. The author recently revealed that she asked the creative team to handle one controversial part with particular care.

Season 4 follows Benedict, portrayed by Luke Thompson, and Sophie, played by Yerin Ha, as their romance unfolds across strict social divides. Halfway through the season, Benedict proposes that Sophie become his mistress, a moment that has drawn strong reactions online.

Recently, in an interview with Swooon, she was asked whether there was anything she insisted the adaptation avoid changing. The author said, “No. I mean, the one thing that I did talk about was like, you guys need to make it clear that that’s how it is with mistresses and stuff.” Quinn explained that readers of historical romance are often more familiar with such customs than television audiences.

Quinn said her primary request was that the series make it clear how class hierarchy influenced relationships in the period. She said, “You really need to make it clear that this is how it was and for him to… that it would just make no sense for him to ask her to marry him straight off.”

Quinn noted she wanted the series to provide clear context about why marriage between a gentleman and a domestic servant would have been almost impossible. “It would never have occurred to a man of his rank and social status to marry a domestic servant. It just wouldn’t have happened,” the author said.

Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1 is now streaming on Netflix, with Part 2 scheduled to arrive on February 26, 2026.
