Canceled R-Rated X-Men Movie Could Be Revived by Marvel

A new rumor suggests that Marvel is planning to revive and move forward with a previously canceled Ryan Reynolds-centric X-Men movie. The film, based on the comic book team, X-Force, was reportedly in development before Deadpool & Wolverine’s release and even before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019. However, the film did not materialize due to Disney’s acquisition of Fox.

X-Force movie could happen after Avengers: Secret Wars

According to noted industry scooper, Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios is reportedly moving forward with Ryan Reynolds’ previously canceled X-Men movie or X-Force type movie (via ComicBookMovie.com).

However, this should be treated as a rumor, as there is no official word from Marvel Studios — who are currently developing an X-Men film with Jake Schreier and Michael Leslie — on whether an X-Force movie is in the works.

This rumor comes one year after The Hollywood Reporter reported that Reynolds was conceiving a Deadpool movie that would star X-Men characters. The outlet added that the Maximum Effort founder was developing “various treatments for an ensemble film featuring three or four X-Men characters.” They further stated that the fourth-wall-breaking antihero would appear in the film, albeit in a supporting capacity.

Moreover, the outlet shared that Reynolds believed Deadpool being relegated to a supporting role in the film would let the X-Men “be used in unexpected ways.” Furthermore, the report stated that the project was being made without Marvel Studios’ direct involvement.

It did not reveal which X-Men characters Reynolds was considering for the film. However, scooper MyTimetoShineHello later shared that the X-Force-esque movie would supposedly feature Josh Brolin’s Cable, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and Storm.

Notably, an incarnation of X-Force appears in Deadpool 2. Formed by Deadpool and Weasel to confront Cable, the group consists of Domino, Bedlam, Shatterstar, Zeitgeist, Vanisher, and Peter.

However, all except for Domino are killed at the start of their first mission after their attempt to land after jumping from a jet goes horribly wrong. Deadpool later forms a new lineup consisting of himself, Domino, Cable, and Colossus. Later, in the post-credits scene, Deadpool uses Cable’s time-traveling technology to travel back in time and save Peter from being killed.
