Netflix’s new Japanese hit, Last Samurai Standing’s creator, Michihito Fujii, has now teased plans for Season 2 and 3, fueling fan excitement for the series that has already got a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Michihito Fujii talks about Seasons 2 and 3 of Last Samurai Standing
Last Samurai Standing creator Michihito Fujii opened up about his vision for the show beyond its bloody first season in an interview with ScreenRant. When asked how many seasons he would need to tell the full story, Fujii said, “Two or three seasons.”
However, the director also showed a keen awareness of the realities of modern streaming, where long gaps between seasons can cause viewers to lose the thread of a narrative. This practical concern influenced his approach to the initial batch of episodes.
Fujii explained, “However, sometimes future seasons happen two or three years later, and viewers forget what happened in the past. Because I’m a fan of Netflix, I try to convey as much as I can in one season. I like to do as much as possible.”
Fujii’s comments confirm that the story is far from over. The first season, which debuted on Netflix on November 13, 2025, ends with several major threads left dangling. While the brutal battle royale has whittled down the contestants, protagonist Shujiro and his companion Futaba are still en route to Tokyo, determined to expose and stop Kawaji’s conspiracy to overthrow the government. The finale also subtly hints at potential treachery from Kyojin, a storyline ripe for exploration in a new season.
Moreover, the show adapts the ongoing manga Last Samurai Standing by Shogo Imamura and illustrator Katsumi Tatsuzawa, which currently has four published volumes. While the source material offers narrative guidance, Fujii’s comments suggest he may take the adaptation in his own direction if given the opportunity.
An official renewal for Last Samurai Standing Season 2 is still pending. Netflix will likely base its decision on the show’s viewership performance in the coming weeks.
