24 TV Show Ex-Showrunner Shares Promising Update on Follow-up

A follow-up of Kiefer Sutherland’s iconic counter-terrorism TV show 24 may finally be gaining momentum. Former showrunner Howard Gordon has offered a promising update, echoing Sutherland’s recent comments about a new script that could bring Jack Bauer back into action.

Howard Gordon talks about 24 follow-up prospects

Howard Gordon, the longtime executive producer and showrunner behind Fox’s real-time thriller 24, has confirmed that a potential follow-up is officially in development. While promoting his upcoming Netflix series The Beast in Me, Gordon addressed Kiefer Sutherland’s recent remarks about a new script that could revive the franchise.

During an interview with Deadline, Gordon acknowledged that he and Sutherland have indeed been discussing a new chapter for the series. “It’s absolutely in process, there’s something we are developing,” he revealed. However, he noted that Disney, who is now the owner of 20th Television, has not yet committed to the project.

Gordon also reflected on the franchise’s long history, including previous spin-offs and concepts that never materialized. He shared that he has explored numerous iterations over the years, from the Corey Hawkins–led offshoot to pitches from multiple writers. One abandoned idea even involved a real-time legal thriller.

Still, the nostalgia remains strong. “I have such a nostalgia for that show, and I think Kiefer does too,” Gordon said, adding that finding a direction that “held water” creatively had been a challenge for a long time.

The new idea, he hinted, may finally be the one, though it is not yet official. For Gordon, quality is the top priority. “What I really don’t want to happen is that it’s not good… It’s not fair to the fans… So it has to be something that you connect to.”

All in all, with both Sutherland and Gordon enthusiastic and a “really good” script in hand, the countdown to a 24 follow-up may finally be starting again.
