Marvel Studios seems to be regrouping after years of mixed responses to its post-Endgame projects, and the next big step reportedly involves bringing back the duo responsible for some of its greatest successes — the Russo Brothers.
The Russo brothers likely to continue after Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars
Joe and Anthony Russo will not only return for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars but are also reportedly expected to remain involved with Marvel Studios beyond those films.
Take it with a grain of salt, but renowned scooper Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus states, “Marvel’s bringing the Russos along for the ride post-Secret Wars as part of the famous ‘Marvel Parliament,’ basically just overseeing the general story for the next Saga.”
Perez continued, “Because they want to avoid the mistakes they made with the Multiverse Saga in trying to branch out to many different story points and having multiple open endings without having a clear direction.”
Marvel Studios has struggled to recreate the cohesive storytelling and emotional resonance of the Infinity Saga. Even Kevin Feige acknowledged that quantity may have taken precedence over quality in recent years.
Perez explained, “The main idea of the saga was to basically introduce this idea of the multiverse so Marvel could play around in the sandbox and do things they’d never really get a chance to do if it was just their main, established universe.” However, he added that COVID-19 disrupted these plans, forcing Marvel to release projects “months and even years before they were ready.”
This is where the Russo brothers’ specific expertise becomes invaluable. Their experience in juggling a vast array of characters and weaving together complex plotlines in the Captain America and Avengers films makes them ideal architects for a more cohesive future. “They can provide their input into what works where, what can be introduced now vs. what can be introduced some other time, and so on,” Perez says.
For now, there has been no official confirmation that the Russo brothers would continue after Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
