A new rumor claims that a hit Netflix animated film with a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score is getting a sequel. The 2021 sci-fi comedy became one of the platform’s most acclaimed originals for its humor, heart, and vibrant animation. While details about the follow-up remain under wraps, reports suggest that development is already underway.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 rumored to be in works
According to a post by reliable scooper MyTimeToShineHello on X (formerly Twitter), a sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines is reportedly in development. Director Mike Rianda helmed the 2021 animated sci-fi comedy.
It was produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller through Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, and Lord Miller Productions. The story follows a quirky family who must save humanity from a robot uprising.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines debuted on Netflix on April 30, 2021, after Sony sold its global distribution rights because of the pandemic’s effect on theaters. The movie quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched animated titles, reaching 53 million households in its first month.
It received wide acclaim for its animation, humor, and LGBTQ+ representation. The film earned nominations at the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Producers Guild Awards, and won several honors at the Annie and Critics Choice Awards.
In a 2021 interview with Fandango, director Mike Rianda hinted at the possibility of a sequel, saying, “We’ve got a lot of good ideas on the board, at least. I’ve been talking to people about it — some folks who are excited about that idea.”
He also reflected on the creative freedom behind the original film, explaining, “Even though we were working with a big studio, we had a ton of freedom. Basically, we all kind of agreed that the audience would be our boss, instead of our bosses being our boss.”
The film featured the voices of Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Eric André, Olivia Colman, and director Mike Rianda. Mark Mothersbaugh composed the score. If confirmed, the sequel would bring back one of Netflix’s most acclaimed and award-winning animated hits.
