Grey’s Anatomy Creator on How or When the ABC Series Will End

Shonda Rhimes recently reflected on the success of her hit ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy. Despite creating one of television’s longest-running dramas, she admitted that she isn’t sure how the medical series will eventually come to an end. The creator also expressed her appreciation for the viewers who continued to support the series for two decades.

Shonda Rhimes didn’t think Grey’s Anatomy would ‘get past season four or five’

Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, admitted hat she never imagined that the series would become one of television’s longest-running dramas.

Appearing on NBC’s Today show on October 13, Rhimes reflected on the show’s remarkable run and her uncertainty over its ending. She said, “I’d say back around episode 150 I knew how it was gonna end.”

The creator added that she had no idea that show would survive beyond four or five seasons. She explained, “Now we’re at 450—I have no idea. I mean, I wasn’t sure we’d get past season four or five. So the fact that we’re here in 22, season 22, is insane.”

Rhimes, who served as showrunner until season eight, emphasized that the decision regarding the show’s conclusion is no longer hers alone. She believes the conclusion will ultimately depend on both the cast and the audience. The creator said, “I feel like at this point, that decision is not mine as much as it is the fans and our cast.”

Rhimes noted that she hopes the eventual ending will feel satisfying and optimistic for everyone involved. “I want everybody to end in a really positive, great way.” She also expressed deep gratitude toward the fans who have remained devoted to the series. “The fact that they’ve kept watching the show and they’ve stuck with it, and they’re excited and invested,” the creator reflected.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 premiered on October 9.
