Why You Won’t See Andrew Garfield in The Social Network 2

Andrew Garfield, who was part of the cast of 2010’s The Social Network, recently clarified whether he’s returning as Eduardo Saverin in the movie’s sequel, The Social Reckoning. Conversations about the sequel have been circulating since 2019, before it was officially announced in June 2025.

Aaron Sorkin, who penned the script for the first movie based on Ben Mezrich’s 2009 book, The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, is writing and directing the sequel.

Andrew Garfield won’t be joining The Social Network 2 cast

Andrew Garfield revealed during an interview with IndieWire that he would not reprise his role as Eduardo Saverin in The Social Reckoning. ”No, no,” he said. “Eduardo [Saverin] is in Singapore having a good time.” When asked if he was excited to watch the film when it comes out, the After the Hunt star responded, “Oh yeah.”

While Garfield’s comments do seem final, he has previously hidden his involvement in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (via TheWrap). So the possibility of his inclusion in The Social Reckoning can’t be ruled out entirely.

Garfield is reportedly not the only actor who is not coming back for the sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeremy Strong will portray Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Reckoning, which means Jesse Eisenberg will not reprise his role from the first movie. Additionally, David Fincher, who helmed The Social Network, is not returning either.

The cast of The Social Reckoning also includes Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, and Bill Burr. Set more than a decade after the first movie, the plot of the sequel revolves around Haugen, an engineer at Facebook who joins forces with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz to shed light on the biggest secrets of the social network.

The Social Reckoning debuts in US theaters on October 9, 2026.
