Rumor: Next Conjuring Universe Movie Gets Title After Last Rites’ Success

As per a new rumor, the title of the potential next movie set in The Conjuring Universe has been revealed. This comes following the massive success of The Conjuring: Last Rites, which was slated to be the ninth and final entry in The Conjuring franchise.

According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman, a sequel to 2019’s The Curse of La Llorona is in development under the title The Revenge of La Llorona. While The Curse of La Llorona is not considered an installment in The Conjuring franchise, it does take place in that fictional universe, mostly because of the appearance of Tony Amendola’s Father Perez in the movie. Amendola first portrayed the character in 2014’s Annabelle, a feature that is part of The Conjuring franchise.

Speculations about a prospective sequel to The Curse of La Llorona have been going around for a while. While critics panned the movie, it was a box office success. However, nothing has been officially confirmed since then. If the above-mentioned rumor does turn out to be true, the “Revenge” in the title could potentially have two separate meanings.

On one hand, it could be a reference to the eponymous spirit’s inherently vengeful attributes. On the other hand, this might be a hint that La Llorona will target Linda Cardellini’s Anna Tate-Garcia and her family, as they triumphed over her in the first feature.

The Curse of La Llorona drew inspiration from the real-world folklore of La Llorona. Perhaps the sequel can establish an even stronger link between La Llorona and The Conjuring franchise.

Richtman also mentioned that the production for the sequel will start next month in Buffalo, New York, and that the team behind the project is looking for a young male actor for the role of Antonio (between 12 to 15 years old), the son of new characters Luisa and Diego. The description refers to Antonio as a supporting character who “wants to be brave and the protector of his family” and “wears his family’s anxiety in his sleeve.”
