Why Jimmy Kimmel Live! Is Pre-Empted Indefinitely

Jimmy Kimmel faces fallout after controversial remarks about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. In a recent broadcast, the late-night host criticized political reactions to the shooting, sparking swift backlash that led ABC to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! goes off air ‘indefinitely’

An ABC representative said Jimmy Kimmel Live! “will be pre-empted indefinitely,” while Kimmel declined to comment as he left the Los Angeles studio (via BBC). During his Monday night monologue, Kimmel said the “Maga Gang” was trying to “score political points” from the murder. He also mocked both the half-mast flags for Kirk and the president’s public grieving.

On September 10, a gunman fatally shot 31-year-old Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Authorities charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder. His mother said he had become “more pro-gay and trans-rights oriented.” Court records show Robinson was not registered with any political party and did not vote in the 2022 or 2024 elections. Investigators have not identified a motive for the killing.

Trump reacted on social media, calling ABC’s suspension “great news for America” and labeling Kimmel’s show “ratings challenged.” He also attacked Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, describing them as “two total losers.” Trump has previously clashed with Kimmel, including during the Oscars when Kimmel read Trump’s public criticisms live on stage.

FCC commissioner Brendan Carr criticized Kimmel’s remarks on a right-wing podcast, calling them “the sickest conduct possible” and urging Disney to act. He said broadcasters must “operate in the public interest” and suggested “an apology would be a very reasonable, minimal step.” FCC member Anna Gomez countered that the Trump administration was misusing government power “to suppress lawful expression.”

Nexstar Media, which owns 32 ABC affiliates, said it would pre-empt Jimmy Kimmel Live! “for the foreseeable future.” Sinclair Broadcast Group announced it would replace Friday’s broadcast with “a special in remembrance of Charlie Kirk.” Sinclair also urged Kimmel to issue a direct apology and make “a meaningful personal donation” to Kirk’s family and Turning Point USA (via Deadline).

Kimmel left the studio without addressing reporters, while disappointed fans waiting for entry voiced frustration at the show’s cancellation. A small protest gathered outside the studio holding signs critical of Trump.
